Welcome back to the SkinartJ Tattoos YouTube channel for best Edmonton tattoos! I’m Alana, and as always, I’m joined by tattoo artist Jay herself. My name is Alana, and today, we’re going to be talking about J’s vision.
A Touch of Inspiration
Let’s start with a quote:

Van Gogh was a tortured artist if there ever was one, and this quote resonates deeply with many.
Here’s a fascinating statistic: A survey by the Social Science Journal revealed that people with tattoos often experience increased self-confidence. The more tattoos they have, the more confidence they are shown to have.
Alana: Jay, do you think tattoos give you confidence?
Jay: “I would think so. For myself, getting more covered and seeing what I want to see on my body definitely brings up a sense of comfort in my own skin.”
Alana: I love that! Tattoos definitely make me feel comfortable in my own skin as well. I love them for that.
Finding the Right Tattoo Artist
Finding the right tattoo artist is a daunting task for many. There are so many different tattoo styles and artists, and for someone who’s never had a tattoo before, it can be hard to know where to start.
In today’s episode, we’ll be discussing SkinartJ’s vision and who her ideal clients are.
Alana: Jay, what is the main problem that you solve for your customers?
Jay: “I think the main problem that I solve is being an artist that they can come to, that they can put trust into. People want to find artists that they can be comfortable with. It’s something that has popped up in the industry—people now have the flexibility and availability of choosing among hundreds or thousands of very talented artists. I would think that I’m solving a problem of not having that personal experience. I want them to be comfortable, and I want them to feel at ease while they’re getting something so personal and so intimate. I think that’s something I ideally provide for people.”
Alana: Excellent, I love that.
Jay’s Approach to Tattooing
Alana: How many tattoos do you complete in a day, or how many is your perfect number to finish in a day?
Jay: “That fluctuates. It all depends on the piece. If it’s a larger piece, it can be one person for the whole day, where we’re working on a larger project and chipping away at something that might take us a few sessions to get through. Or, for smaller pieces, it can be up to about five, I would think, on average. I like to spend time with people and actually talk to them, so it can fluctuate depending on the size of the piece and how intricate it is. I’d say between five and one.”
Alana: Excellent! I like that—five to one, depending on how big the tattoo is. What’s the largest tattoo that you’ve ever worked on?
Jay: “I’ve recently started a back piece with a gentleman that put his trust in me. It’s my first back piece ever, and he let me have that opportunity to create that for him. It’s a huge step for me. It’s really exciting, but also very challenging and very provoking for the mind, which I love. So definitely the biggest that I’ve gone so far.”
Alana: Excellent! How long do you think that’s going to take to complete? How many sessions?
Jay: “I’m estimating probably around 40 hours. It does take us a while. We’re into our second session, and we’re still just filling in a lot of black stuff to get the line work as bold as I want it to be. Then we’ll go from there to create other shading and get the rest of the stencil on.”
Alana: Perfect! I love that. That’s so exciting.
Future Goals and Aspirations
Alana: How many customers do you want to help in the next five years?
Jay: “I don’t know if I have a set number. I want to help as many people as I potentially can handle who are willing to come to me. The more elaborate and larger the pieces are, the fewer clients I’ll be able to take on.”
Alana: So is your goal to get bigger pieces in the future?
Jay: “Ideally, yes. I do want bigger pieces because I love working on them, but I’m also very happy to take on small pieces too.”
Alana: Wonderful! I love that. So no specific magic number, just that you welcome everyone.
Jay: “Yeah, I love that.”
Alana: What do you plan to do to reach your goal of helping as many customers as possible?
Jay: “I still, once again, work on myself so that I’m a better person who can show up and be presentable to the client for what their needs might be. Also, in general, I work on my artwork. That’s always a continual process. Eventually, I would like to get into more painting classes and drawing classes—that is a goal down the road. And just continue expanding and finding more artists who are open to learning and growing alongside one another.”
Building Connections Through Art
Alana: What sets you apart from other artists?
Jay: “Of course, there’s always the typical, like, I’m a female artist, which can bring comfort to some clients. But I also value emotional connection. The authenticity and the way I interact with people is of crucial importance. I focus a lot on building my communication skills to better serve others.”
Jay explained how her unique approach blends styles and explores different techniques to create something fresh and meaningful for every client.
Alana: What inspires you?
Jay: “There’s a lot that inspires me. My own emotions are a start. I use drawing to channel a lot of my thoughts and process them. Nature is another huge inspiration, especially this time of year in fall. The colors, watching things change, and seeing little bugs—it’s all so inspiring.”
