Flowers are one of the most popular tattoo themes. Tattooing has been around for over 5,000 years, and flowers have remained a popular design, symbolizing things like the tribe you belong to. I love that piece of tattoo history!
Tattooing can be a huge emotional investment, and finding the right artist for your artwork is equally important. Choosing someone who shares your values can help you decide if they’re the right artist for you.
Why Values Matter
Alana: Jay, why do you think it’s important for customers to know your values?
Jay: “I think it’s important so they know what to expect from the experience and the kind of person they’re working with. Through my own tattoos, I’ve had different experiences—some more pleasant than others. Moving forward, I now seek out artists I can feel comfortable, open, and vulnerable with. That’s what I aim to bring to the table for my clients.”
Non-Negotiables: Honesty
Alana: What is one non-negotiable about your service—something you’re not willing to compromise on?
Jay: “Honesty. For example, if I feel like I can’t execute a tattoo in the best way for someone, I’ll let them know. I’ll explain what might happen if we proceed, or I’ll suggest another artist whose style better suits their needs. Honesty is key to making sure clients get the best results.”
Jay’s Artistic Style
Alana: What kind of styles do you do best?
Jay: “I’m really drawn to neotraditional and illustrative styles. I love being expressive in my artwork. I also enjoy working with geometric designs, but I add my own twist. I incorporate bold or muted tones, depending on the client’s energy and the story we’re creating together. I reflect that in the color combinations and complexity of the piece.”

Timeliness
Alana: What is one non-negotiable value you have about timeliness?
Jay: “Timeliness is so important because everyone’s time is precious. I always make sure I’m prepared before a client arrives. I have the stencil ready, the tools set up, and everything organized so we can start without delays.
“That said, I understand that unexpected things happen, like traffic or family emergencies. As long as there’s communication, I’m understanding and flexible. But overall, I value being accountable for our time.”
Teamwork
Alana: What is one non-negotiable value you have about teamwork?
Jay: “Teamwork is crucial for building each other up and creating a successful group. One thing I won’t tolerate is toxicity or gossip. I prefer direct communication and openness.
“I know being direct can be intimidating for some people, but it’s meant to foster connection. Teamwork should always be built on communication and trust.”
Integrity
Alana: How important is integrity to you?
Jay: “It’s incredibly important. I hold myself to high standards and always try to align my actions with my values. Acting with integrity allows people to see who you truly are and what you represent as an artist.”
Positive Attitude
Alana: Why is it important to have a positive attitude?
Jay: “Your mental mindset can make or break a lot of things. If you constantly dwell on things out of your control or focus on what you lack, you perpetuate negative emotions. I’m not saying ignore those feelings, but don’t feed into them.
“I focus on practices like meditation and grounding myself before sessions. I also make sure I’m nourished—being hungry makes me grumpy! Preparing mentally helps me approach situations with a clearer, more open mindset.”
Delivering Value
Alana: How do you demonstrate value to your customers?
Jay: “I prioritize connection. I try to remember as much as I can about my clients—their stories, preferences, and experiences. Through our conversations and the artwork we create together, I aim to make them feel seen, valued, and understood.”
Investing in Personal Growth
Alana: How do you invest in your development as an artist and person?
Jay: “I’m passionate about personal development. Therapy is a big part of my life—it helps me process emotions and improve my connections with clients. I’ve also adopted a workout routine to stay physically fit for long tattooing sessions, and I’m working on improving my sleep routine.
“I read a lot of books on self-compassion, emotions, and understanding people. These help me create a safe space for clients during such an intimate experience.”
Alana: Do you find people are emotionally vulnerable during sessions?
Jay: “Very much so. Many clients open up to me, and I welcome that. If someone needs to cry during a session, I encourage it. It’s part of the healing process, and I’m here to provide support.”
Tattooing as a Passion
Alana: Why do you care so much about tattooing and your customers?
Jay: “Tattooing has been my passion since I was a child—it’s always been my dream. I love the connection I experience with my clients. It’s such a human need to connect, and through my art, I get to serve others while fulfilling that need for myself.”
The Tattoo Process
Alana: What is the process like for clients who want a tattoo from you?
Jay:
- “First, we set up an in-person consultation. I prefer these over emails for clarity—what clients call ‘small’ and what I consider ‘small’ can be very different!
- During the consultation, we discuss placement, pain intensity, and their vision. I review their references and create a customized design.
- Three days before the session, they can review the artwork. If there are any major changes needed, we may reschedule to ensure the design is perfect.
- On tattoo day, I ensure everything is set up and ready to go. Clients are encouraged to bring snacks and comfy items to help them through the session.
“Depending on the client’s pain tolerance and the tattoo size, we may complete the linework in one session or finish the piece entirely if it’s smaller.”
